La importancia de viajar cuando aprendes un idioma / The importance of traveling when learning a new language

Sé que estamos viviendo un momento muy difícil, la pandemia ha venido a cambiarlo todo, incluida la forma en que viajamos, también soy consciente de que salir de nuestro país puede resultar algo costoso (la primera vez que Salí de México fue hace un par de años y tuve que ahorrar mucho dinero). Pero créame, visitar un país donde no se habla tu primer idioma te vuela la cabeza, en el buen sentido, por supuesto.

Apoyo firmemente la idea de que los seres humanos somos capaces de aprender nuevas habilidades cuando realmente las necesitamos para sobrevivir, cuando estamos en peligro, nuestro modo de supervivencia se activa y comenzamos a aprender nuevas habilidades para sobrevivir. Por ejemplo, no es lo mismo pedir información sobre cómo llegar al hospital en tu clase de español solo por practicar que pedir la misma información en la vida real donde es una cuestión de vida o muerte.

Además, cuando estás en un país donde no hablan tu idioma, te das cuenta del valor real de aprender ese idioma. Tal vez mientras estás tomando una clase de español en un aula normal o desde tu computadora, simplemente no ves el uso real de ella, incluso podría ser un poco aburrido memorizar todas esas reglas gramaticales y nunca usarlas. Sin embargo, la sensación de poder expresar tus ideas, pensamientos y sentimientos en otro idioma y que los hablantes nativos realmente puedan entenderte no tiene precio.

Te animo a viajar (ven a México no te arrepentirás) tan pronto como la situación global te lo permita, porque cuando aprendes un idioma también aprendes sobre diferentes culturas. Hay muchas cosas que no vas a aprender en una clase de español normal, hay muchos conceptos, modismos, expresiones, refranes y jergas que solo puedes entender si viajas. Hazlo, cambiará tu forma de ver el mundo, créeme.

I know that we're living a very tough time, the pandemic has come to change everything, including the way we travel, I’m also aware of the fact that going out of our country could be kind of expensive (the first time I went out of Mexico was a couple of years ago and I had to save a lot of money). But trust me, visiting a country where your first language isn’t spoken, blows up your mind, in a good way of course.

I strongly support the idea that human beings are able to learn new skills when we really need them to survive, when we are in danger our survival mode turns on, and we started to learn new skills to survive. For example, it’s not the same asking for information about how to get to the hospital in your Spanish class just for practicing rather than asking the same information in real life where it is a matter of life and death.

Moreover, when you are in a country where they don’t speak your language, you realize the real value of learning that language. Maybe while you’re taking a Spanish class in a regular classroom or from your computer, you just don’t see the real use of it, it could even be kind of boring memorizing all that grammar stuff and never use them. However, the sensation of being able of expressing your ideas, thoughts, and feelings in another language and native speakers actually can understand is priceless.

I encourage you to travel (come to Mexico you won’t regret it) as soon as the global situation lets you because when you learn a language you also learn about different cultures. There are a lot of things that you’re not going to learn in a regular Spanish class, there are a lot of concepts, idioms, expressions, sayings, and slang that you can only understand if you travel. Do it, it’ll change the way you see the world, trust me.
